The Rolex Oyster Precision was produced between the beginning of the 1950’s and the end of the 1960’s. The vast majority of these were produced with a 34mm case however this example is the rare 36mm case variant. This watch features a classic and timeless black dial with the distinctive ‘dagger’ hands and batons making this a very interesting watch. The hands and batons are similar in to that on the Rolex watch made by Rolex and given to Edmund Hillary for his expedition on Mount Everest in 1953.
The most unique trait of the watch is its size. Whilst most Oyster Precisions, with or without date, were produced with 34mm cases and an lug width of 18mm or 19mm, this model 6424 is 36mm (excluding the crown) and it has 20mm lug width. These are similar to that of the Rolex Explorer of the same era.
The hand wound movement in this example allows for a very slim case – the screw down case back is almost flat. In addition the lugs have no holes which was unusual in Rolex stainless steel watch at the time. I have recently seen pictures of the Hillary watch (from Beyer Watch and Clock Museum in Zürich) and noticed that it also has lugs with no holes.
This is definitely a watch for the very discerning and I have considered not offering this one for sale at all. I have a feeling that this could be the one that I will regret selling!
Regardless, we only have one, so it is first come first served!
Please note that images are of the actual watch.
